Sources for informational materials:
· Article of the Week—see teacher-author Kelly Gallagher’s page:
· Picture of the Week--Time magazine offers a compelling visual documentation of the week through photographs. The site also includes easily accessible archives of past weeks.
· Digital Textbook—Jim Burke writes, “In a world of so many types of text, some of which focus on words while others incorporate a range of media, it seems negligent to offer only the dry pages of an old textbook or novel.”
· The Week Magazine: my go-to resource for informational text for developing to advanced readers. This source is the favorite pick for student-led Reading Minutes in my reading classes.
The Reading Minute:
At the beginning of class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1-2 students will share a piece of interesting reading with the class. The selections may be culled from newspapers, magazines, novels, textbooks—anywhere we, as readers, come across interesting text.
All the Reading Minutes share one goal: to demonstrate the world of reading richness.
