General Info: Differentiation

How will you differentiate students that you know will struggle and/or students who will excel?

    1. General Information
      1. Differentiation means the teacher is using instructional strategies so all students have multiple options for taking in information, making sense of ideas, and learning. In other words, all students have access to the information and are learning at their level.
      2. The intent of differentiated instruction is to maximize each student’s growth and individual success by meeting he or she where they are and assisting them in the learning process.
      3. Ideas for differentiation
        • Use ongoing assessments of readiness and interest
        • Make flexible groupings as needed (a student may be proficient in one area within a topic and below grade level in another area within the same topic)
        • Guide students by helping them to set appropriate individual goals based on readiness, growth and goal attainment.
        • Understand and use speech and expressions familiar to students
        • Adjust questions as needed, while staying on topic, depending on the student.
        • Assign specific questions for various groups of students on written activities or quizzes. Always provide option to go beyond the minimal requirement for that student.
        • “Compacting Curriculum” or provide alternative activities for the student who has mastered the content while staying on topic keeping him/her connected to the class.
        • Provide tiered problem solving activities allowing some to work on problems while teacher provided additional instruction as needed for others.
        • Tiered activities of related task with varying complexity. All the activities are related to the essential skill allowing alternate ways to reach the same goal.
        • Anchoring Activities is a list of activities a student can do related to the specific topic of focus, which can include enrichment opportunities, problem solving, application, response journals. (This is not busy work, and must be worthy of a student’s time and appropriate to their learning needs)
        • Learning centers
        • Learning contracts
        • Student interest surveys
        • Independent Study Projects
        • Learning Profiles/Styles, which helps to know how to ajust the learning environment
