Formative Assessment General Information

  1. What is a formative assessment?
    1. Define- Built in opportunities or classroom assessments to gain an understanding of how students are learning and then use this information to make beneficial/responsive changes in instruction while learning is still underway towards the SMART goal.
    2. The content of the Formative Assessment should…
      1. be directly linked to the SMART goal (see sample)
      2. be directly linked to what is being taught
      3. represent the teams agreement of what and how to assess
      4. accommodate for diverse learners in the class (access for all)
    3. Four options for Formative Assessments
      1. Selected response and short answer
      2. Extended written response
      3. Performance assessment (typically used with rubrics)
      4. Personal communication (This student reflection, though critical to the learning process, should not be used for formal data collection)
  2. How is formative assessment different from summative assessment?
    1. Description of the summative assessment-measures the level of success or proficiency that has been obtained at the end of an instructional unit, grading term, or school year. In other words, it is the measurement that happens after learning is supposed to have happened to determine if it did.
    2. Description of formative assessment- Built in opportunities or classroom assessments to gain an understanding of how students are learning and then use this information to make beneficial/responsive changes in instruction while the students are working towards your SMART goal.
    3. Two clear distinctions of summative and formative
      1. Formative occurs during instruction, summative occurs when instruction is done on the topic.
      2. Formative is ongoing/flexible/dynamic, so changes in instruction can occur; whereas, summative means the student is done learning the topic regardless of their level of proficiency.
