2013-14 Grant Application Information & Instructions

Announcing the Technology Innovation Grant for 2013-2014 School Year.

The deadline to apply for the 2013-14 Innovation Grant is Friday, June 28, 2013.

Who is eligible? Any teacher within the Canby School District is eligible to apply for "individual" and "classroom" grants (see details below), even if you received the grant during the 2008 through 2012 school years. Principals may apply for "school" grants as well.

What would the grant cover? The grant funds INNOVATIVE and EMERGING technologies for classroom curricular support and Common Core standards-based projects. Could you take your students even further if you had new equipment or additional technical support? You tell us! Successful grant proposals will demonstrate creative approaches to using new technology and research, exploration, creative thinking and more. The grant committee is looking for projects with quantifiable or qualifiable results that can be replicated -- in other words, if another teacher got the same stuff, could s/he do the same thing? The grants fund a maximum of $2,000 per project for individual grants, more for classroom and school grants.

Need some ideas? Here are real examples from previous Innovation Grant recipients:

What doesn’t the grant cover? This grant is not meant to cover classroom basics such as computers, document cameras, or projectors.

How is the grant funded by the District? The District uses a combination of restricted non-personnel dollars from a construction rebate from the state of Oregon, eRate savings, and Title II-A dollars to fund the requests. No dollars from the general fund nor dollars that could be spent on personnel are used to support the grant.

How do I get the grant? Fill out a Technology Innovation Grant Application form. All sections of the application must be completed to be considered.

When is it due? Grant proposals are due to Joe Morelock through the Google form completion, and the supporting narrative via email to innovation@canby.k12.or.us by Friday, June 28, 2013.

What happens then? Grant proposals will be reviewed by a committee and evaluated for eligibility to be funded through the available grant dollars. All applicants will be notified of the status of their application via email during the summer.

Is there anything else I have to do? Yes, as a recipient of the Innovation Grant, you agree to:

  1. Take an Action Research Class (4 afternoons, after school) to help guide your project. It can be for credit or not for credit
  2. You will be required to present your project at the Innovation Celebration in Spring, 2014.
  3. *** New this year: pilot and help implement a digital citizenship focus for students

Application process

Some of the questions on the application require thought and essay-type answers. The application "form" will be a Google Form, but this year you should be able to review your answers (and make changes) once you've submitted the application, if you select to have Google send you a copy of your answers (that is the default setting on the form). Please use a word processing application program to answer the questions first, then transfer your answers to the Google form linked below. A copy of your responses will be sent to you via email if you leave that box checked on the Google application page.

What's the form going to cover?

Basic information, like school, grade levels, your school's instructional focus and other short items. Also, you will be asked to write a short (approx. 200 words) paragraph describing the project. You will also be asked about the instructional goals for your students using the technology, how it relates to your school's instructional focus, target group(s) of students, and links to Common Core state standards (CCSS).

What's new about the grants from previous years?

Three main changes are important for you to note. We have new categories for the grants (individual, classroom, school), we require connections and alignments to Common Core state standards, and the addition of digital citizenship focus for students and teachers using technology in . The following paragraphs will describe those in more detail.

Grant types

For 2012-13, we opened up the process so that larger grants can be targeted at both classrooms and schools. We are continuing this process this year as well. The grants are broken out in this way:

  • Individual grants, still $2,000 MAXIMUM dollar amount. There will be approximately 20 individual grants available.
  • Classroom grants, for which teachers can apply with the support of their building principal for a "set" of devices. It is important that teachers work with their building leaders if they are considering a larger classroom grant. There will be approximately 10 classroom grants available.
  • School grants, for which principals can apply with the support of their teachers for a "set" of devices per grade level or other special population of students. There will be approximately 2 school grants available.

Sub time

For 2014, we can allow teachers to apply for a portion of their grant to include sub or release time. There is a limited amount of funds set aside for that expenditure, so be aware that we may not be able to grant everyone's requests for that pool of funds. Also, your grant must focus on producing a product or process that others can easily copy or implement in their own classrooms. As a budgetary number, please approximate a full sub day cost at $200/day. Sub time can either part of your overall grant or an individual grant on its own. Please make sure to describe what you'd be doing with those days and how they are critical to your grant's success.

Common Core State Standards

As we did for 2012-13, the 2013-14 grants require a connection and alignment to Common Core State Standards. Here are the information pages for Common Core that are part of this year's grant requirements:

What's this digital citizenship business? As students continue to grow up in an all-digital world, much different than most adults who are their teachers, understanding how to stay safe and make good choices online is becoming an increasingly essential part of their education. The District is considering Common Sense Media as our foundational curriculum for next year and beyond.

What else is required? Part of the form will be checkboxes stating that you agree to take the class and do a final presentation of your findings. Also, separately from the Google Form, you will be asked to submit a 1-2 page document describing in more detail the scope and the goals of the project. That must be done via email attachment, sent to innovation@canby.k12.or.us.

What's the narrative supposed to be like? The narrative is meant to give you a forum through which you can describe more fully your vision of the project you are proposing for the grant. Use it as a free-form way of telling us your goals and your dreams of how you hope your project looks. The narrative helps the grant committee to better understand what you're trying to accomplish.

Okay, so what are the questions already?!?

Here are the questions that you will find (mostly in this order) on the linked Google form:

  • Your name, phone number, and email address
  • School, your role, and grade level target
  • Which grant you are targeting (individual, classroom, school)
  • Certification of building principal support for classroom and school grants
  • Project title (Choose something that describes your instructional goal(s))
  • Primary connection to Common Core State Standards
  • Primary learning goals (What specific targets are you trying to reach?)
  • Your school's instructional focus- statement/phrase
  • Instructional design (how are you going to use the technology)
  • Which technology items will support these instructional goals, making a list of those items
  • Target group(s) of learners (Migrant, ELL, low readers, high math achievers, TAG, Sped, etc.)
  • How you will assess/evaluate the effectiveness of your project
  • Detailed budget (maximum $2,000 per individual grant projects)
  • Agreements for attending the class and piloting the digital citizenship curriculum
  • This Google application form submitted AND a one-page supporting narrative of your grant proposal should be submitted via email to innovation@canby.k12.or.us by Friday, June 28, 2013.

If you have further questions about the grant or how to apply, please email Joe Morelock, morelocj@canby.k12.or.us

The Google form application is located here. You will need to be a Canby School District employee to view and submit the form.

For those of you who'd like to work on the answers ahead of time, or are not Canby SD employees, a PDF version of the application (from Google form) can be downloaded here:
