Innovation Grants Deliver Academic Gains

Thirty technology innovation grant teachers recently completed their action research course with presentations demonstrating outcomes based on use of technology in their classroom. Grants were awarded to teachers who submitted a successful request for iPads or iPod touches they believed could boost student achievement in their classrooms. Each teacher posed a research question based on academic goals or SMART goals to determine how effective their use of technology with students could be. It was obvious throughout the evening of presentations that the teacher’s goals had been met in nearly every grant model. “This is not about teaching technology. Our people use technology to enhance academic learning, which is completely different. Collaboration and technology has enhanced academic focus and they are coming together in a beautiful way,” said Superintendent Jeff Rose as he welcomed the teachers and visitors.

Joe Morelock, Technology and Innovation Director, told the grant teachers that “Many people come to visit our schools from other districts in the state, the country and beyond to see how this is working in our district and tonight’s visitors are here for that same reason. You had an idea about how kids could interact with technology in a meaningful way, implemented your plan and made a significant impact on student learning.”

Jeremy Ensrud, a Canby High science teacher and one of the grant recipients, wrote his research paper based on student-centered technology asking ‘what happens to student engagement when iPads are used in a science classroom?’ “I have been interested in discovering teaching methods that motivate and engage low-achieving students in the science classroom,” he said. “I have witnessed large gaps between the students that are engaged and successful in science, and those students that are unmotivated and struggling.”

“Why use technology?” The following highlights the beliefs, process and outcomes from Ensrud’s iPad in the classroom project and outcomes from his research:

• Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics classes are essential in preparing the students of today for the jobs of tomorrow by developing critical thinking and problem solving skills;

• Current technology helps students realize real-world connections between their classroom education and their future;

• Through formative assessment feedback, summative assessment comparisons, student perception surveys, and classroom observations, use of iPads were found to have a positive impact on both student engagement and performance in the science classroom;

• Nearly every class worksheet was transcribed into Google form documents and linked to the class website;

• Several biology applications were explored as well as a flash card study aid called gFlash. Student-developed vocabulary lists were uploaded and synced with the gFlash application, flash cards and multiple-choice quizzes were automatically generated for student review and practice.

• Data was collected comparing formative assessments to summative assessments between classes using iPads and those not using iPads;

• Students using iPads showed an average improvement 38% higher than non-iPad classes;

• 90% of the iPad classroom students averaged passing scores on the post assessment of 80.5% with only 70% of the students in the non-iPad who averaged 67.6%;

• The average assignment turn-in rate was 91% for iPad classes compared to a rate of 80% in the non-iPad classes last year.

Ensrud’s research conclusions:

• iPads significantly improved student engagement, participation and performance. Students were excited about using the technology resulting in students being on-task and submitting more assignments. The immediate feedback and communication allowed students to identify where they were having problems, and it also provided opportunity to re-teach topics that were obvious problems;

• Mobile technology will revolutionize education by increasing productivity, enhancing student learning, and helping students make real-world connections between their classroom education and their future; and

• The iPad is a wonderful tool for assessing student learning and that the surface has hardly been scratched regarding educational potential for mobile devices in education.

One student told Ensrud that “I used to think I didn’t like science, but your class has totally changed that!”

“We are teaching a generation of youth who have grown up connected to advanced mobile technologies,” said Ensrud. “Mobile platforms are creating new methods for collecting and disseminating information within the classroom. My purpose in the teacher research project was to observe what happens to student engagement when they use iPads in a science classroom and it was successful.”
